Over 700 bursars, accounts clerks, and storekeepers from Kakamega County gathered in Bungoma Tourist Hotel on Tuesday April 7, for a four-day conference aimed at strengthening school administration, accountability, and operational efficiency.

The conference, one of the largest of its kind in the region, brought together non-teaching personnel from across Kakamega County to share knowledge, learn best practices, and enhance collaboration with school leadership. The agenda includes workshops on financial management, procurement procedures, record-keeping, and strategies for improving teamwork between support staff and principals.

Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati, who addressed the opening session, commended the participants for their pivotal role in the day-to-day running of schools. “You are the backbone of our schools’ operational systems. Your dedication ensures that institutions function effectively,” he said.

Wangamati emphasized the importance of teamwork, urging bursars, clerks, and storekeepers to maintain close collaboration with principals and supervisors. He noted that while their work is often behind the scenes, it is critical to the smooth operation of schools and the overall success of the education system.

In addition to professional development, Wangamati encouraged delegates to explore Bungoma during their stay. He highlighted the strong cultural and social ties between Bungoma and Kakamega counties, noting that such interactions provide an opportunity to build lasting professional and personal networks.

The conference featured a series of interactive sessions, panel discussions, and presentations by experts in school administration. Participants are expected to leave with improved skills in financial oversight, procurement processes, and record management, enhancing their ability to support school operations effectively.

Organisers said the event is a vital platform for addressing challenges faced by school support staff, fostering peer-to-peer learning, and promoting innovation in school management. By investing in the professional growth of bursars, accounts clerks, and storekeepers, Kakamega County aims to ensure that schools operate efficiently and provide high-quality education to students.

The four-day gathering is expected to conclude on Friday, April 10, with participants returning to their respective institutions equipped with new strategies and insights to improve administrative practices across the county.
