Bungoma High School’s rugby campaign in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term One Games came to an abrupt end after the institution lost its appeal against the team’s disqualification.

The decision, which effectively knocks the Western Region heavyweights out of the national contest, has sparked concern within school sports circles, with the institution questioning the process that led to the ruling.

In an official statement released on Tuesday April 7, Bungoma High School maintained that its rugby team had complied with all eligibility and participation requirements, adding that concerns raised during the verification process—ranging from player eligibility to documentation—had been conclusively addressed, with all necessary evidence submitted.

However, the school expressed dissatisfaction over what it termed as the late introduction of additional issues, particularly regarding student transfers, despite its readiness to provide further clarification.

“It is both surprising and regrettable that new concerns were raised after due process had been followed,” the statement read.

The former rugby powerhouse also cited delays in the communication of the final verdict, arguing that the manner in which the process unfolded raises questions about transparency and procedural consistency in the management of school competitions.

Bungoma High School further clarified that players previously flagged over eligibility concerns did not feature during the regional qualifiers, insisting that the team earned its place at the nationals fairly and on merit.

Following the unsuccessful appeal, the team has now been officially eliminated from the championships, with players released to return home—bringing a premature end to what had been a promising campaign.

The development is a major blow to the players, who had impressed en route to the national stage, and adds to a growing list of disputes that have recently clouded school sports.

Despite the setback, Bungoma High School reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, integrity, and fair play, while pledging full support to its players and technical bench.

The school has called on KSSSA officials to uphold fairness, accountability, and transparency in handling eligibility matters, warning that the credibility of school competitions depends on strict adherence to due process.

Bungoma High School indicated it will continue to pursue the matter through the appropriate channels, even as attention shifts to the remainder of the national games.
