The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced the opening of applications for teachers and teacher educators to undergo training in the development of quality test items.

The training is part of KNEC’s efforts to build capacity in the assessment of learner competencies, particularly for the effective implementation of the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) in Basic Education and Teacher Training levels.

According to KNEC CEO Dr. David Njeng’ere the training aims to ensure that teachers are equipped with the necessary skills to contribute to high-quality assessments that reflect the curriculum’s learning outcomes.

The council further noted that interested applicants must possess unquestionable and irreproachable integrity and be subject specialists or experts in the subject or learning area they wish to be trained in.

They should also be currently teaching at one of the following levels: Primary School (Grades 1 to 6), Junior School (Grades 7 to 9), Senior School (currently handling Grade 10), Teacher Training Colleges (DTE-PP&P, DSTE, DSNE), or Stage-Based Curriculum (Foundation, Intermediate, Prevocational, and Vocational levels).

They must also have the relevant academic and professional qualifications and be familiar with the content of the curriculum designs in their areas of specialization.

A minimum of three years of teaching experience is required, and applicants must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Additionally, applicants must be recommended by the head of their institution.

Prospective applicants are invited to submit their online applications by April 13, 2026, through the KNEC portal at https://markingapp.knec.ac.ke Only successful applicants will be contacted via phone or email.

Teachers who have previously been trained by KNEC in Item Writing are not eligible to apply for this training. The training is aimed at enhancing the development of quality test items, and those selected may later be contracted by KNEC as professionals for various assessment tasks.

This initiative reflects KNEC’s ongoing commitment to improving educational standards and ensuring effective assessment in Kenya’s education system.
