The Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Kabarak University, opening a pathway for diploma holders to complete degree programmes in a shortened duration.
The agreement was formalised at Kabarak University’s main campus in Nakuru, with senior officials from both institutions in attendance.
KIMC was represented by its Chairman, Silas Jonyo, Council Training Chairperson Esther Kagiri, and Chief Executive Officer and Director Peter Wakoli. They were received by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Henry Kiplangat.
Under the deal, KIMC diploma graduates will be eligible for credit transfer into degree programmes at Kabarak University, reducing the time required to attain a bachelor’s qualification. The arrangement targets working professionals who hold KIMC diplomas but have been unable to pursue further academic qualifications.

Wakoli said the MOU was a direct response to calls from the institution’s alumni. “This MOU is a direct response to our alumni who have long desired to elevate their academic portfolios but were hindered by demanding professional schedules,” he said.
The partnership will adopt a blended learning model, combining in-person and online instruction to allow students to continue working while studying.
Beyond academic progression, the two institutions will collaborate on film and media production projects, giving students hands-on industry experience. The agreement also provides for joint research initiatives and staff exchange programmes.
The MOU follows an earlier benchmarking visit by Kabarak University’s School of Music and Media to KIMC in Nairobi, which was aimed at strengthening academic and industry links ahead of a formal partnership.
