Parents of Nyabisimba village in Nyamira County have been guided on ways of guiding their children during school holidays and weekends to curb risks.
Area Assistant Chief Calista Isaboke speaking during a public baraza said that children when left without proper care can engage in dangerous activities which could harm their life.
For children to be safe, Isaboke suggested that parents and guardians engage children in activities like farming, art classes, or outdoor games to keep them safe. This, she said, can distract them from potential dangers like picking unknown plants or objects.
She asked teachers to work hand in hand with parents and design ways of keeping the young ones busy and safe especially during the weekends and school holidays. “These young curious minds need to be guarded at all times as they grow, give them objects to manipulate in their experimental quest,” said the Chief.

Pastor Elias Atuti of Ikonge Pentecostal Assemblies Church of God (PAG), also urged parents to form family groups where children can be taken care of by trained caregivers on spiritual matters and appreciation of nature to enable them grow holistically. He emphasized that the environment plays a big role in a child’s growth and development.
He cautioned parents against letting kids play on roadsides due to risks from speeding vehicles. To guide children on road safety, Pastor Atuti suggested teaching them to use designated crossing points, look both ways before crossing, and wear visible clothing when walking at night.
The advice comes after three lower grade Primary school kids from Nyabisimba primary school reportedly picked the white objects and carried them home for cooking thinking that they were mushrooms.
The situation was however rescued by the area concern parent, who alerted the villagers who came to the rescue of kids.
