The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) has proposed extending the duration of homecare management and pre-departure training programmes from the current two weeks back to one month.
The proposal was presented by Senior Industrial Training Officer and Assessment Supervisor Rose Komu during a session with the Diaspora Affairs and Migrant Workers Committee, chaired by MP Lydia Haika.
The committee was on an inspection visit to a NITA-accredited institution offering the training programmes.
Members of the committee were informed that the training period had originally been set at one month before it was reduced to two weeks.
According to Gerald Kirimi, Director of Corporate Services at NITA the revision followed consultations between recruitment agencies and the Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection, Alfred Mutua.

Kirimi explained that recruitment agencies had raised concerns about the cost of maintaining candidates for the longer training period, prompting the adjustment.
During the visit, the committee also sought clarification on post-training follow-up for candidates deployed abroad. Komu noted that this responsibility falls under the National Employment Authority (NEA), which ensures successful candidates proceed to their designated countries.
The committee later toured Mountain View Technical and Vocational Training Institute, where members inspected a simulated model house used for practical training and engaged with trainees.
The committee is expected to continue its oversight visits with a similar inspection planned in Kiambu County.
