PS Inyangala pledges elevation of MMUST Butula campus into a technical university

Higher Education Permanent Secretary PS Beatrice Inyangala

Higher Education Principal Secretary Dr. Beatrice Inyangala has assured residents of Butula Sub-county that the government will fast-track the transformation of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Butula Campus into a fully-fledged technical university.

Speaking during the official handover of assets and title deeds to MMUST management at the Butula campus on Friday, Dr. Inyangala said her office had already initiated the process, promising to prioritize the matter in line with laid-down regulations. She emphasized that the community’s long-standing dream of hosting a technical university was now within reach.

“To move this institution to the next phase, we require leadership that sees beyond today. We have listened to your needs, including the completion of key facilities like the library and your aspiration to transform it into a technical university, and I want to assure you that my office will take up these matters with urgency within the framework of the law,” she said.

The PS underscored the importance of skills-based education, innovation, and entrepreneurship in shaping Kenya’s future, noting that technical universities are critical in equipping young people with practical skills for the modern job market. “The future of our country will be built by young people who are not only seeking employment but are also capable of creating opportunities for others,” she added.

Dr. Inyangala challenged MMUST management to exercise transparency, accountability, and visionary leadership as they oversee the transition. “What is being handed over is not just property, but also trust and expectations of the community. The people are looking up to us for proper management and tangible progress,” she said.

She lauded leaders from Butula Sub-county for their commitment to education, singling out former MP Prof. Christine Mango as the pioneer of the idea and current MP Joseph Oyula for his continued support through NG-CDF, which has financed infrastructure projects at the campus.

Principal Administrative Secretary in the Office of the President, Arthur Osiya, echoed her sentiments, stressing that the institution’s strong ties with the local community made it deserving of elevation. “The leaders from this region have consistently pushed for the realization of this vision. The community of Marachi in Butula Sub-county has been patiently waiting for this milestone, and it is only right that we support and nurture this institution,” he said.

Osiya added that upgrading the campus into a technical university would spur development in the region, including improved infrastructure, job creation, and increased economic activity. “This county currently has only one university, and this will become the second. We all understand the impact that comes with such an institution—from better roads and housing to thriving businesses,” he noted.
