Competency-Based Education (CBE) continues to redefine the education landscape in Kenya by shifting focus from examination performance to nurturing learners’ talents, skills, and potential. Among the pathways offered in senior school, the Arts Track under the Arts and Sports Science pathway stands out as a unique opportunity for learners who are creatively gifted and passionate about artistic expression.
The Arts Track is designed to allow learners to align their education with their natural talents and interests. It provides a platform where creativity is not only recognized but also developed into viable career pathways. This track is anchored on three main subjects: Fine Arts, Music & Dance, and Theatre & Film. Every learner choosing this track is required to select at least one of these core subjects, ensuring that their area of strength is nurtured effectively. The subject combination codes under this track begin with AS10, indicating their classification within the Arts pathway.

Learners have a wide range of subject combinations to choose from, allowing flexibility and personalization of their academic journey. Some combinations integrate creative subjects with sciences and humanities, such as Computer Studies, Fine Arts, Music & Dance (AS1021), or Biology, Fine Arts, Theatre & Film (AS1002). Others blend arts with languages and cultural studies, such as French, Music & Dance, Theatre & Film (AS1044), Arabic, Fine Arts, Theatre & Film (AS1001), and Mandarin Chinese, Music & Dance, Theatre & Film (AS1050). Some combinations incorporate social sciences and religious studies, including History & Citizenship, Music & Dance, Theatre & Film (AS1048) and Christian Religious Education, Fine Arts, Theatre & Film (AS1005).
Additionally, learners interested in integrating arts with practical or technical skills can select combinations like Business Studies, Fine Arts, Theatre & Film (AS1003), Computer Studies, Music & Dance, Theatre & Film (AS1039), or Fine Arts, Sports & Recreation, Theatre & Film (AS1017). The wide variety of combinations ensures that learners are not limited but instead empowered to explore interdisciplinary connections that enrich their learning experience.
The significance of the Arts Track goes beyond subject selection. It prepares learners for a wide range of professional careers that are increasingly relevant in today’s global economy. In the field of performing arts, learners can pursue careers such as professional musicians, dancers, choreographers, composers, music teachers, and performing artists. They can also venture into specialized roles such as music therapists, dance therapists, sound engineers, and critics in both music and dance.
In the visual arts, the opportunities are equally diverse. Learners can become painters, sculptors, illustrators, graphic designers, art directors, or museum curators. Careers such as art conservators, exhibition designers, and art critics also fall within this domain, offering learners a chance to preserve and promote cultural heritage.
The Theatre & Film component opens doors to careers in the creative media industry. Learners can become actors, directors, playwrights, scriptwriters, producers, or film editors. Other specialized roles include lighting designers, sound designers, costume designers, and casting directors. These careers are essential in the rapidly growing global entertainment and media industry, which continues to create employment opportunities for skilled professionals.
When effectively implemented, the Arts Track plays a critical role in achieving the vision of CBE—to produce engaged, empowered, and ethical citizens. It recognizes that not all learners excel in traditional academic pathways and provides an alternative route where talent and passion can be transformed into meaningful careers.

For parents and teachers, understanding this pathway is crucial, especially during the subject selection period. Parents of Grade 9 learners need to actively engage with such information to guide their children in making informed decisions. Similarly, Grade 10 parents must support their children as they finalize choices that will significantly influence their future career paths.
Ultimately, the Arts Track is not just about creativity; it is about purpose, identity, and opportunity. It ensures that every learner, regardless of their strengths, has a chance to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
