The government has been urged to install lightning arresters in schools located in areas prone to lightning in the North Rift region.

This comes as the region continues to experience heavy rainfall that has caused flooding in several area, raising concerns over the safety of learners.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Aldai branch Chairperson Stephen Misoi said the region has already recorded incidents of lightning, warning that the situation could worsen if precautionary measures are not taken.

Speaking in the area, Misoi said the government should move with speed to protect schools that are vulnerable to lightning strikes.

“The government should install lightning arresters in schools that are prone to lightning. We have already witnessed a few cases in this region and with the ongoing rains, the risk remains high,” said Misoi.

He noted that weather forecasts indicate the possibility of continued rainfall in the coming weeks, calling for increased vigilance from both school administrators and parents.

Misoi also urged parents to prioritize the safety of their children during the rainy season.

“Parents should closely monitor their children and avoid releasing them to school too early in the morning when the weather conditions are not favourable. The safety of our children must come first,” he added.

His sentiments were echoed by Bishop Neophitus Kongai of the Orthodox Church in the North Rift region, who called for comprehensive safety measures to protect learners.

“There is a need for elaborate measures to safeguard learners, especially during this rainy season when disasters such as lightning and floods are common,” said Kongai.

The bishop also appealed to leaders to support families affected by the ongoing rains, noting that many have suffered significant losses.

“The rains have caused massive losses in many parts of the country and leaders should come out to support the affected families,” he said.

Kongai further called for the relocation and compensation of communities living in flood and landslide-prone areas.

“It is unfortunate to see people continue suffering in risky areas yet there are safer places that remain unused. The government should consider relocating and compensating such communities,” he added.

The North Rift region has been experiencing persistent rains in recent weeks, leading to flooding in several villages and raising fears of further disasters if preventive measures are not implemented.
