National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Kikuyu Member of Parliament (MP) has called on the government to introduce policies that stop schools from selling uniforms directly to learners, giving parents the freedom to buy uniforms from shops of their choice.
Speaking in Uriri sub-county on Sunday, March 15, Ichung’wah said many schools are forcing parents to purchase uniforms at inflated prices, creating an unnecessary financial burden.
The Kikuyu MP added that he has already made proposals to the Ministry of Education and expects positive changes in the near future.
The legislator also emphasized the need for uniformity in school attire for learners moving from Grade 1 to junior secondary school within the same institution.
He said parents should not be forced to buy new uniforms when their children progress to higher classes in the same school.

In addition, Ichung’wah raised concern about the situation in some senior secondary schools that operate without learners in Grade 10.
He said the government must implement measures to ensure that all senior secondary schools have full enrollment and that every learner receives quality education.
He argued that such policies would make education more affordable, protect parents’ interests, and promote consistency in school practices.
Ichung’wah also called on the Ministry of Education to strengthen monitoring and ensure that schools adhere to these guidelines, while addressing gaps in management across the country’s education system.
The call comes amid the senior school enrolments crisis, whereby schools under category 3 and 4 are struggling with low numbers of students as high numbers are reported in schools under category 1 and 2. The policy according to the MP will make education accessible, affordable, and equitable for all learners while reducing unnecessary costs on parents.
