In my previous articles, I discussed what learners need to know about the Pure Science and Applied Science tracks under the STEM pathway in the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system. As Grade 9 learners prepare to select their pathways and Grade 10 learners finalize their subject combinations, it is important to also understand the Technical Studies track, which is another key option within the STEM pathway.
The Technical Studies track focuses on developing practical and technical skills that prepare learners for careers in engineering, construction, aviation, marine technology, and industrial production. Unlike the Pure Science track, which emphasizes theoretical scientific knowledge, the Technical Studies track equips learners with hands-on competencies and technical expertise that are highly needed in modern industries.
Learners who choose this track will study subjects such as Aviation, Electricity, Marine and Fisheries, Metal Work, Wood Work, and Building and Construction. These subjects allow learners to develop practical skills related to mechanical systems, construction, marine technology, and manufacturing. It is therefore suitable for learners who enjoy designing, building, repairing, and working with machines and tools.
Identification of Technical Studies track subjects
All subject combinations in the Technical Studies track are identified using codes beginning with ST30. These codes help schools and the Ministry of Education identify the combinations that belong to this track.
Examples of subject combinations include: General Science, Marine & Fisheries, and Media Technology (ST3050); Aviation, Geography, and Physics (ST3121); Computer Studies, General Science, and Media Technology (ST3074); Biology, Business Studies, and Metal Work (ST3084); Geography, Metal Work, and Physics (ST3105); Biology, Geography, and Power Mechanics (ST3013); Electricity, General Science, and Home Science (ST3008); General Science, Marine & Fisheries, and Power Mechanics (ST3118).

Core Mathematics, General Science, and Marine & Fisheries (ST3047); Chemistry, Geography, and Power Mechanics (ST3015); Business Studies, Geography, and Media Technology (ST3068); Business Studies, Marine & Fisheries, and Metal Work (ST3089); Aviation, Geography, and Media Technology (ST3120); General Science, Media Technology, and Power Mechanics (ST3011); Computer Studies, General Science, and Marine & Fisheries (ST3044); Core Mathematics, Electricity, and Geography (ST3024); Chemistry, Geography, and Marine & Fisheries (ST3054); Electricity, Geography, and Marine & Fisheries (ST3022); General Science, Media Technology, and Wood Work (ST3053); and Computer Studies, Electricity, and Geography (ST3006).
These combinations demonstrate the flexibility within the track and allow learners to combine technical subjects with science and business-related subjects.
One unique feature of the Technical Studies track is that learners are expected to acquire both academic knowledge and practical technical skills. As a result, learners in this pathway will have the opportunity to receive dual certification, meaning they will graduate with both the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) certificate and a technical certification from relevant training authorities. This approach is intended to prepare learners not only for university education but also for technical training, entrepreneurship, and employment in skilled industries.
Career Opportunities under the Technical Studies track
The Technical Studies track opens opportunities in a wide range of professional and technical careers. For learners interested in marine and ocean-related fields, possible careers include Marine Biologist, Oceanographer, Marine Engineer, Aquaculture Manager, Fisheries Scientist, Marine Conservationist, Marine Geologist, Naval Architect, Underwater Archaeologist, Marine Policy Analyst, Coastal Zone Manager, Marine Educator, and Marine Environmental Consultant.
Learners who are interested in aviation can pursue careers such as Pilot (Commercial or Private), Aircraft Mechanic or Technician, Aerospace Engineer, Aviation Maintenance Manager, Flight Dispatcher, Air Traffic Controller, Avionics Technician, Flight Instructor, Aircraft Inspector, and Drone Operator.
The track also supports careers related to construction and engineering, including Civil Engineer, Architect, Structural Engineer, Construction Manager, Quantity Surveyor, Building Inspector, Site Supervisor, Estimator, and Bricklayer.

For learners interested in metal fabrication and mechanical work, career opportunities include Welder, Machinist, Sheet Metal Worker, Metal Fabricator, Blacksmith, Metal Sculptor, Ironworker, Metal Casting Technician, Metal Finisher, and CNC Machine Operator.
Similarly, learners who develop skills in wood technology and carpentry can pursue careers such as Carpenter, Cabinet Maker, Woodworker, Joiner, Wood Turner, Furniture Designer, Luthier (instrument maker), Boat Builder, Wood Carver, and Restoration Specialist.
As learners prepare to select their pathways, guidance from teachers and parents remains extremely important. The Technical Studies track is particularly suitable for learners who demonstrate strong interest in practical work, engineering, design, construction, aviation, and marine technology. Choosing the right pathway should therefore be based on a learner’s interest, personality, and ability, which are key principles emphasized in the Competency-Based Education system.
By selecting the Technical Studies track, learners can build strong technical competencies that are essential for industrial development, innovation, and economic growth. With proper guidance and commitment, learners in this pathway will be well prepared for careers in engineering, technology, construction, and technical entrepreneurship, contributing meaningfully to national development.
