KUNOPPET elects Salome Maina as new National Chairperson

The Kenya Union of Pre-Primary Education Teachers (KUNOPPET) has elected Salome Maina as a new National Chairperson replacing Lawrence Otunga in a hotly contested election that was held on March 07, at the Central Organization of Trade Unions – Kenya (COTU-K) head offices in Nairobi.

Maina, who now becomes the first Woman to be elected to lead a teacher’s union at the national level is taking over the leadership when Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers are facing numerous challenges under the county governments, and is expected to team up with other union officials in fighting and agitating of ECDE teachers rights and better working conditions.

The other positions were adopted as unopposed notably the National vice chairlady held by Lucy Mwanyika, Secretary General- Samuel Opiyo, Deputy Secretary General- Margaret Gathigia, National Treasurer- Emily Ngaira, Assistant National Treasurer- Joyce Rugut, Organizing Secretary- Lydia Karuga, Secretary Gender- Maureen Onyango, John Ruga- Trustee, Francie Masaviru- Trustee, and Roselyne Odoyo- Trustee.
