Rift Valley Regional Director of Education James Indimuli has cautioned school heads across the region against engaging outsiders to train learners in co-curricular activities, insisting that the responsibility lies strictly with teachers employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Speaking from his office in Nakuru City, Indimuli stressed that co-curricular programmes such as science and engineering fairs, school games, and special needs competitions are integral parts of the school curriculum. He said the Ministry of Education will not allow non-teachers to take charge of training learners in these activities.

“All learners participating in co-curricular activities must be trained by teachers posted to their schools. It is against Ministry directives to use outsiders, including retired teachers, to train learners. We have well-qualified and talented teachers who are capable of nurturing learners’ skills within schools,” Indimuli said.

He warned that any school found using outsiders to train learners will face immediate disqualification from regional competitions. The directive applies to primary schools, junior secondary schools, and senior secondary schools across Rift Valley.

Indimuli further clarified that retired teachers are not permitted to train learners in co-curricular activities, reiterating that only serving teachers should handle the responsibility. “We want school heads to understand that retired teachers should not be involved. Let us allow our current teachers to train learners in school-based activities,” he emphasized.

The Regional Director also announced the schedule for upcoming Rift Valley co-curricular events. The 2026 Rift Valley Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be held in Lodwar, Turkana County, on March 11. The Rift Valley Secondary School Games are set for March 16 in Nakuru County, while the Primary School Games will take place in Kericho County on March 27. The Rift Valley Regional Special Needs Games will be hosted either in Nandi County or Elgeyo Marakwet County on March 17.

Indimuli urged teachers and learners to uphold professionalism during the events, noting that co-curricular activities provide vital opportunities for learners to nurture their talents and develop essential skills. “We expect high standards of conduct to ensure all learners benefit fully from these programmes,” he said.
