The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has launched a nationwide mobilization drive requiring all senior secondary schools across the country to nominate one teacher each to serve as a KEMIS champion teacher, in a major step toward strengthening the implementation of the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS).

The initiative, spearheaded by the Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI), is being rolled out simultaneously in counties across Kenya, with County and Sub-County Directors coordinating the exercise at regional levels.

According to a circular issued to field officers, every senior school is expected to identify a qualified teacher who will support the school principal in managing KEMIS operations.

The nominated teachers will oversee key functions including data entry, validation, system updates, and internal capacity building to ensure smooth and accurate use of the digital platform.

Education officials say the exercise is part of a broader national strategy to anchor KEMIS at the institutional level and enhance data integrity in the education sector.

The selected teachers will serve as focal persons within their schools, helping to streamline digital records and promote accountability in institutional data management.

They will also undergo specialized KEMIS champion training facilitated by KEMI to equip them with technical and operational skills.

To qualify for nomination, teachers must demonstrate ICT competence in using digital platforms and also proven reliability and integrity in handling institutional data

They should be available to attend KEMIS champion training and show commitment to data-driven school management

The county directors have been tasked with ensuring that nominations are submitted through an official online portal and that consolidated lists are forwarded in the prescribed Excel format.

The mobilization is taking place in multiple venues across counties, including regional education offices and designated training centers, where school heads are being briefed on the nomination process and expectations.

The sub-county directors are leading sensitization meetings to ensure uniform understanding of the guidelines.

Education stakeholders have described the rollout as a critical milestone in Kenya’s digital transformation agenda.

By strengthening institutional ownership of KEMIS, the government aims to improve accuracy, accountability and sustainability of education data used for planning, funding allocation and policy decisions.
