Scene where a vehicle has overturned along a dusty Mandera road as residents gather at the accident site following the tragic incident that claimed the lives of two teachers travelling home for half-term.

Two teachers serving in Mandera County are reportedly dead following a grisly accident. The cause of the accident is not clear at the moment.

The teachers were said to be travelling home for half-term.

One of the teachers who had boycotted his teaching job in the region owing to security concerns arising from Al-Shabaab murders was unfortunately one of the victims of the latest accident.

The sad news has been confirmed by the Kenya Teachers in Hardship and Arid Areas Welfare Association (KETHAWA) Secretary -General, Ndung’u Wangenye, who has been representing the troubled teachers serving in Northern Kenya.

The teacher is said to have returned to Mandera in January this year after reconsidering his position.

The affected teachers had staged several demonstrations at the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) seeking transfers away from the hostile stations.

Their employer, however, stuck to its guns, asking the teachers to resume duties or face being fired.

Quite a number were subsequently interdicted, while others were dismissed from service in 2023 during the tenure of then TSC Chief Executive Officer, Dr Nancy Macharia.

Their case against TSC is still pending in court.
