The Kitui County Women’s Representative, Dr Irene M. Kasalu, on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, officially launched the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF)-Grade 10 to 12 Scholarships Programme in Kitui County.
She was the chief guest at the event she had organised at the Kitui Multipurpose Development Training Institute. Empowering students through education was the theme of the event.
During the function, Dr Kasalu presented cheques for 9,798,552 shillings to 61 Grade Ten students, each student receiving 27,000 shillings.
Speaking to beneficiaries, parents, and education officials, among others, after launching the programme, Kasalu pledged to continue supporting education in Kitui County.
“This is my first function in 2026. I have opened this year with the official launch of the NGAAF-Grade 10 to 12 Scholarships Programme in our county for the benefit of our county’s children. So we have a good vision for our children in Kitui County,” the politician said.
Kasalu, a mathematician by profession, said the community greatly helped her acquire her high school and university education.
The Kitui County Member of Parliament said the Kitui County’s residents are in dire need of food aid as a result of the failure of the last October-December rains in the area. And she appealed to donors for assistance with food.

Kasalu, 45, is among the five candidates vying for the Kitui County governor seat during the 2027 Kenyan general elections.
She asked the local people to pray for her and vote for her as their county governor in 2027. “I say as a Kitui County governor in 2027, all our vocational training centres in the county must be empowered for the good of education in our county,” Kasalu said. “I must introduce the school feeding programme in the county when I become the county’s governor,” she added. And she added that if she becomes the Kitui County governor, the pro-poor bursaries for needy students in the county will be full scholarships rather than partial ones.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) Lower Eastern Kenya Regional Coordinator, Theo Mwania, and the NGAAF Kitui County Board Chairperson, Agnes Kitaa Peter, also addressed the occasion. The Lower Eastern Kenya region comprises the counties of Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni.
