St. Patrick’s High School- Iten to host annual open sports tournament

The St. Patrick’s High School -Iten is set to host its annual open sports tournament on January 31 and February 1, 2026, bringing together schools from across the Elgeyo Marakwet County for a thrilling two-day sporting showcase.

According to a circular issued by the school’s games department, the tournament will take place at the school’s grounds and will feature a wide range of disciplines aimed at nurturing talent, promoting sportsmanship and encouraging healthy competition among learners.

The sports lined up for the tournament include hockey for boys and girls, basketball (5×5), handball, rugby 10s for boys, chess, and cross-country relay events.

Both boys and girls are expected to participate in most of the disciplines, underlining the school’s commitment to inclusive sports development.

All matches will be conducted in accordance with international rules and regulations with kick-off scheduled for 9:00 a.m. each day.

Participating teams will be required to cater for their own meals and pay a participation fee of Ksh 2,500 per team, and an additional of Ksh 500 accommodation pooling fee per school.

Specific team compositions have also been outlined, with four athletes per team for cross-country, five players for chess and six players for racquet games.

For chess, the competition will run in two phases: Day One featuring the General Tournament for Under-18 and Under-14, and Day Two hosting the Teams Championship in a round-robin format.

Schools interested in taking part have been asked to confirm their participation earlier to allow for proper planning and accommodation arrangements.

The annual tournament is expected to attract strong competition and provide a valuable platform for young athletes to showcase their skills, while reinforcing St. Patrick’s Iten High School’s reputation as a hub of sporting excellence in Kenya.
