Parents warned as counterfeit calculators flood market

The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) has issued a stern warning to parents, students, schools, and retailers over the sale of counterfeit scientific calculators as schools reopen across the country.

The advisory follows a major enforcement operation in Nairobi’s Central Business District, where ACA officers seized 2,996 fake calculators valued at approximately Ksh8 million at Rubymall.

Speaking on the operation, Mr. Abdi Abikar, Nairobi Regional Manager for ACA, emphasized the dangers posed by counterfeit learning tools.

“Counterfeit calculators often give inaccurate results or fail unexpectedly. As learners return to school, parents and retailers must ensure students are equipped with genuine and reliable learning tools,” he said.

The authority noted that counterfeit calculators are usually sold at unusually low prices and packaged to mimic genuine brands, exploiting the back-to-school and examination seasons.

Parents and schools are urged to purchase learning tools only from authorized outlets and use verification systems, such as CASIO’s QR-based authenticity checks, to confirm products before use.

ACA reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on counterfeit educational tools, warning that traders dealing in fake goods face serious legal consequences. Enforcement operations will continue nationwide, and the public is encouraged to follow ACA Kenya’s official communication channels for updates.
