The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) on Saturday, January 10, 2026, conducted the Kiambu East Branch Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections under the supervision of senior national officials, marking a key milestone in the union’s calendar.
The exercise was presided over by KNUT 1st Vice National Chairman Malel Langat, who was accompanied by National Executive Council (NEC) members John Karanu and Rahab Nyambura, alongside Kiambu East Executive Secretary Samuel Muiruri Kamau, popularly known as “Putin.”
The presence of the top leadership underscored the significance of the Kiambu East AGM, which is regarded as a pacesetter for branch elections in the Central Region and across the country.
Addressing delegates, Langat delivered a strong and wide-ranging address on behalf of the union, focusing on critical issues affecting the welfare of teachers, including promotions, remuneration, and working conditions. His speech was anticipated to set the tone for KNUT’s advocacy agenda as branch elections roll out nationwide.

Teachers from Kiambu East expressed unity and optimism, reaffirming their support for the national leadership under the stewardship of KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu, also known as “Ratila.”
Delegates praised the national office for its continued engagement with grassroots members and its firm stance on teachers’ rights.

During the elections, most branch officials were elected unopposed, reflecting a spirit of consensus among members.
Samuel Muiruri Kamau was elected Secretary General, while Mercy Chege took the position of Chairperson. Rahab Wanjie was elected Treasurer, Ann Wainaina Vice Chairperson, and Kimani Huho Assistant Secretary General. Alice Wanjiru was elected Woman Representative, while Simon Njogu was chosen to represent persons living with disabilities. Members elected to the Executive Committee included Vincent, Njambi, Nene, and Mwaura, all unopposed.
The only contested position was that of Assistant Treasurer, which was hotly contested between Mirara and Kamicha. Kamicha ultimately retained the seat following the vote.
In his acceptance remarks, Secretary General Samuel Muiruri Kamau pledged to prioritize unity and welfare of teachers in Kiambu East.
“My aspiration is to serve teachers better by uniting them as we fight the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG), which continue to deny many teachers fair promotions,” he said.
He also vowed to push for improved house allowances for teachers working in municipalities within Kiambu County, noting that the current rates do not reflect the cost of living in urban areas.
The successful AGM and elections concluded peacefully, with delegates hailing the process as transparent and orderly. KNUT leaders described the Kiambu East exercise as a strong foundation for upcoming branch elections countrywide and a reaffirmation of the union’s commitment to democratic leadership and teachers’ welfare.
