Katwanyaa Falcons from Matungulu Sub‑county have successfully defended their title in the Governor Wavinya Cup tournament, clinching the championship for the second consecutive year. The annual competition brings together community‑based football clubs, including student teams, from across Machakos County.

The Falcons secured their victory after edging out Scottlanders from Machakos Town 3-1 in a tense penalty shoot‑out at Kenyatta Stadium, following a goalless draw in regular time. Last year, the defending champions defeated Kyevaluki from Kangundo to lift the trophy.

In the women’s category, Jua Kali Queens from Machakos Town emerged champions after narrowly defeating Talanta Queens from Kalama 1-0. The winning goal came in the 48th minute when centre forward Mercy Kamwilwa dribbled past two defenders before unleashing a powerful volley into the Talanta net.

Both the men’s and women’s champions walked away with KSh1 million each, while the runners‑up received KSh500,000. Teams finishing in third place were awarded KSh200,000.

Speaking during the award ceremony, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti praised the tournament for nurturing talent across the county, noting that many young players had progressed to the National League through the platform. She described herself as a steadfast champion of youth empowerment, citing initiatives such as the Machakos Youth Service and the Governor’s Cup as key drivers of opportunity for young people.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who also attended the finals, commended the teams for their skill and sportsmanship. He noted that Harambee Stars coaches were present to scout emerging talent and wished the players success in their future careers.

This year’s edition attracted an impressive 650 teams and more than 14,000 players, underscoring the tournament’s growing influence in promoting grassroots football in Machakos County.
