Kenyan Literary Giant Meja Mwangi Dies at 78, Leaving Enduring Legacy

Kenya’s literary fraternity is mourning the death of celebrated author Meja Mwangi, who passed away in Malindi at the age of 78. Mwangi leaves behind a rich and influential body of work that spanned decades of social realities, struggles and resilience of everyday Kenyan life.

Mwangi earned widespread acclaim for his sharp, unflinching storytelling, with his novels becoming essential reading in Kenya and beyond. His most notable works, among them Kill Me Quick and Going Down River Road, are regarded as foundational texts in modern African literature. Through these narratives, he amplified the voices of the marginalized and offered profound reflections on Kenya’s post‑colonial experience.

His contribution to the country’s literary heritage remains unmatched. Mwangi’s books continue to be studied in schools and universities, celebrated for their depth, authenticity and enduring relevance.
