Education CS Julius Ogamba and PS Belio Bitok display the 2025 KJSEA results, which show female Grade 9 learners outshining boys in 10 of 12 subjects.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced that female Grade 9 learners outperformed boys in 10 out of the 12 subjects assessed in the inaugural Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA).

While unveiling the results, Ogamba highlighted that this pattern signals a rising trend of academic strength among girls in junior secondary and supports national efforts to advance gender parity in schooling.

“It is heartening to see female learners excel in most subjects. This trend reflects the positive outcomes of interventions to support girls’ education and ensure that every child can reach their potential,” he said.

More than 1.1 million learners from 24,366 junior secondary schools sat for the KJSEA, which evaluated students across nine core learning areas.

The assessment serves as a major benchmark in the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum, offering an important measure of learner development at this stage.

CS Ogamba further noted that the findings will play a crucial role in shaping how schools prepare learners for senior school, particularly as the transition to Grade 10 is set to begin on January 12, 2026.

He told parents that placement details will be released before Christmas to help families make timely arrangements.
