Zetech University has rolled out a programme to educate farmers on better farming practices, value addition and marketing strategies to bolster their production which will eventually increase their profits.

Speaking during the farmers symposium held in the institution, Vice Chancellor Prof Njenga Munene said that the latest farming technologies, modernization and embracing value addition are the best shot at increasing food production and generating high proceeds for farmers.

He added that most farmers across the country still grapple with low production levels and meagre returns from their farming since they still uphold archaic farming practices that have already been taken over by time.

Prof Munene maintained that agriculture remains a cornerstone of Kenya’s economic stability and social development, contributing between 21.35% and 22.5% of the country’s GDP in 2024 and employing over 40% of the national population, with more than 70% of rural households depending on the sector for their livelihoods.

“We are keen to respond directly to the pressing need for modernization, value addition, and resilience-building across Kenya’s agricultural value chains. We shall be collaborating with experts in diverse fields across the agriculture sector relay crucial knowledge and skills to our farmers,” Prof Munene said.

The VC noted that farmers will be supported with the skills, technology, and networks needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving agricultural landscape.

“This symposium builds on our dedication to sustainable prosperity and demonstrates the impact of strong partnerships between academia, industry, and the community,” he said

During the forum, participants engaged in discussions on emerging trends in animal production, shared best practices, explored innovative technologies, and connected with industry partners driving growth within the sector.

The event brought together farmers, researchers, agribusiness stakeholders, industry experts, and policymakers in a day of knowledge exchange, practical demonstrations, and collaboration.

The symposium was attended by several industry players and agribusiness partners, including Kenchic, KNCCI, Pembe Feeds, Silverdale Farms, Neema Feeds, Osho Chemical Industries, TruVet, Techwin Limited, Atlantis Solar Systems, Pine Agrivit, among others.

“The Technology Park is designed as an innovation and training hub, and this symposium showcased exactly what we intend it to be—a space where ideas, expertise, and solutions meet real community needs. We are proud to have convened stakeholders committed to advancing animal farming through science, practical skills, and continuous learning,” noted the Programme Leader and Director of the Technology Park, Dr. Beauttah Mwangi.

Farmers who spoke during the event led by Zachary Munyambu hailed the programme as life-changing for farmers noting that besides increasing production it will go a long way in improving the livelihoods of thousands of peasant farmers.

“Farmers will discover new technologies that can improve their farming and ensure they benefit from their farming. This programme is invaluable and was long overdue,” Munyambu said.

The University, through its Corporate Training Academy, is now set to roll out community-focused agricultural trainings to equip farmers with specialized skills in animal nutrition, poultry farming, pig farming, and dairy farming.
