Manga Deputy County Commissioner Valentine Rimo has warned parents in Nyamira County against exposing their children to illegal businesses especially during this long holiday, saying that the act goes against the law.

Addressing the residents, the Commissioner said that some parents in the area were sending their children to sell or buy illicit brews to avoid being discovered by the law enforcement officers.

“The use of illicit beer has permeated this region as parents now use their children who are on school holiday to run the illegal business. But the law will catch up with them.” She said.

The Commissioner was flanked by Manga Sub county Administration Police Commander Esther Ojwang, who echoed her sentiments, adding that child labour is illegal and no child should be exposed to any activity which goes against their rights.

“No child is supposed to be exposed to any labour unless they have reached 13 years and above, and they are not allowed to work for more two hours under close supervision of adults.

She singled out that most children in the area are working in quarry mining, sugarcane cutting and spraying of insecticides and pesticides to animals and plants, the activities which put their life at risk.

Ojwang’ also urged the community to avoid Gender based Violence (GBV) in their homes, saying that its effects narrow down to the development of their children.

She appealed to anybody who might see children being exposed to harmful labour to report to the authorities.

The administrator asked parents to take care of their children during the long December holiday by providing them with enough food, studying material and express parental love.
