The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Branch Assistant Secretary Geff Bett is recuperating well in his rural home,Mugango, Bomet Central sub county after being involved in a road accident over the weekend.

Bett, who was admitted to AGC Tenwek Hospital on Saturday and discharged on Sunday, was hit by a boda boda rider at Silibwet town on Saturday evening.

Commonly referred to as “OCS” among teachers, Bett sustained a fracture on his left leg and is currently recovering at home under medical supervision.

Speaking to Education News after his discharge, Bett expressed gratitude for the quick response from members of the public, medical personnel, and colleagues who stood by him following the accident.

“I thank God for sparing my life and for the wonderful support I’ve received from teachers, friends, and family,” Bett said.

He added: “It was a frightening moment, but I’m thankful. I also appreciate the doctors and nurses at Tenwek Hospital for their professionalism and care.”

He also took the opportunity to reassure KNUT members of his continued commitment to serving them despite his temporary setback.

“This incident has only strengthened my resolve to continue championing the welfare of teachers. Our unity as educators is our biggest asset, and I will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the voices of teachers across Bomet are heard loud and clear.”

Bett further urged road users to exercise greater caution, especially within busy town centers where pedestrian and motorcycle traffic is high.

“We must all take responsibility for our safety on the road. A moment’s carelessness can change a life. I urge our boda boda riders and all road users to be extra vigilant,” he added.

The accident occurred just a week after a local opinion poll showed Bett widening his lead against his closest challenger, Ms. Lily Chumo, popularly known as the ‘Iron Lady.’

According to the independent survey conducted between October 21 and 24, 2025, Bett — popularly referred to as OCS — now commands 72 percent support among KNUT-registered teachers in Bomet County.

The poll sampled 396 teachers from the county’s four sub-counties — Bomet Central, Bomet East, Chepalungu, and Konoin — through both phone and face-to-face interviews, with a margin of error of ±3.2 percent.

“The poll results are humbling,” Bett said. “They show that teachers believe in our vision of transparency, accountability, and service. I take this trust seriously and promise to continue leading with integrity and dedication.”

Bett also hinted that once fully recovered, he plans to resume his grassroots engagements and meet with teachers across the county to discuss ongoing union matters and future strategies.

“As soon as I regain full mobility, I’ll be back on the ground meeting teachers face-to-face. Our agenda for better working conditions, fair remuneration, and professional growth remains my top priority,” he remarked.
