Sombre mood at Sot Technical Institute after student’s body retrieved from dam

The discovery of a missing student’s body at Molem Dam has cast a sombre mood over Sot Technical Training Institute, Bomet, as police investigate and counseling services are rolled out for learners.

A sombre mood has engulfed Sot Technical Training Institute in Bomet following the discovery of a student’s body in what is suspected to be a case of suicide.

The student, who had been missing since last week, was found dead after an intensive search. His body was retrieved from Molem Dam, although it remains unclear when he may have taken his own life.

A handwritten letter believed to be from the deceased was discovered near the scene. The note reportedly contained personal information, including his bank account details, M-Pesa PIN, and several passwords. However, the full contents of the letter have not been made public.

Confirming the incident, area police said investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

“We have launched a thorough investigation into the matter,” said a police officer who requested anonymity as they are not authorised to speak to the press. “At this stage, we are not ruling out anything until we complete the forensic analysis and talk to those close to him.”

The management of Sot Technical Training Institute expressed their deep sorrow and urged students and staff to remain calm as the authorities investigate the case.

“This is a deeply painful moment for us as an institution,” said one senior administrator. “We appeal for calm and patience as investigations proceed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased.”

The incident has reignited concerns over rising mental health struggles among students in the region. In recent months, several similar cases have been reported, prompting religious and community leaders to speak out.

“It’s heartbreaking to see young lives lost in such a manner,” said Rev. Peter Langat, a local clergy member. “We urge students to seek help and open up about the challenges they are facing. There is always a way out, and suicide is never the answer.”

The body was taken to the Bomet County Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination as investigations continue.

Counseling services have since been set up at the institution to support students affected by the tragedy.
