Police detain 10 Litein Boys students after fierce riot over Arsenal–Man City match

Fire-damaged structure at Litein Boys High; police later detained 10 students

Police in Bureti Sub-County, Kericho County, have arrested 10 students of Litein Boys High School following violent unrest on Sunday evening, September 21, sparked by the administration’s refusal to allow learners to watch the English Premier League clash between Arsenal and Manchester City.

According to witnesses, the disturbance began shortly after evening prayers when students protested being barred from watching the match. What started as murmurs quickly escalated into a full-blown riot, with property worth millions destroyed.

Offices belonging to the principal, deputy principal, and other departments were vandalised, while classrooms and dormitories sustained extensive damage.

Resident Florence Chepkirui described the scene as chaotic: “What has happened here, I can say there are lots of demons. When we heard cries yesterday, we came and found students destroying property. Policemen were around, but students destroyed lots of property.”

Another community leader, Geoffrey Mutai, chairperson of the local boda boda association, condemned the unrest.

“We refuse the destruction of properties. I speak as a parent, and this has destroyed the image of the school,” he said.

Authorities confirmed that at least 10 students have been detained at Litein Police Station to aid investigations.

The arrested students are expected to face charges related to malicious damage to property.

This is not the first time unrest has rocked Litein Boys. In previous years, the school has experienced strikes, including one in July 2025 over meal issues and another in 2023 over administrative concerns.
