KNUT official warns teachers against “sweet” loan traps, urges financial caution

West Pokot teachers during a past training session. KNUT officials are now urging them to avoid predatory loans and overcommitment.

Teachers in West Pokot County have been urged to plan their finances well and avoid overcommitment to their salaries.

Speaking to Education News, West Pokot County Assistant KNUT Executive Secretary Joseph Rusii said that many financial institutions target teachers’ salaries with “sweet interests.”

Once a teacher is trapped, the journey of agony begins, he added.

“I urged all the teachers in the county to apply for loans at genuine financial institutions with reasonable terms and conditions with fair interest rates,” said Rusii.

In addition, Rusii particularly cautioned the newly employed teachers, who are the most vulnerable to these rogue financial institutions.

Actually, Rusii asked the teachers to closely observe a third rule on their payslips to avoid overcommitment, which leads to overdeductions.

The effect of over deductions on teachers’ salaries has led to great suffering for some families.

“Kindly take charge of your payslips, plan well for the loan you are taking and execute the planned development, ” Rusii said.

The Assistant KNUT Executive Secretary wildly applauded teachers who have achieved a great deal through Sacco savings.

Many teachers have purchased land, built good houses, and educated their children through savings, loan acquisition, and responsible repayment.

Rusii also thanked the West Pokot County KNUT team for working as a team led by the KNUT Executive Secretary for the benefit of teachers and the learners.
