President William Ruto met vice-chancellors of public universities on Thursday September 18, 2025 at State House, Nairobi, as a nationwide lecturers’ strike entered day two, halting learning for thousands of students.

The Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU) is demanding Sh10.5 billion in unpaid collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), while the government says it has already released Sh2.73 billion.

The Employment and Labour Relations Court has suspended the strike, but lecturers insist on their dues.

Speaking at the meeting, the Head of State defended his administration’s efforts, pointing to the new student-centred funding model, which has raised allocations from Sh44 billion in 2022 to Sh82 billion in the 2025-2026 financial year.

He added that universities generated Sh1 billion from income-generating projects last year, with several insolvent institutions now recovering.

Education CS Julius Ogamba urged lecturers to call off the strike, warning of disruptions to the academic calendar. But with debts of over Sh4 billion still weighing down universities, the crisis remains unresolved.
