The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has celebrated one of Kenya’s own, Jepkosgey Chemoiwa, who has been named the 2025 African Union Continental Best Teacher, a recognition presented by UNESCO’s International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA).

Chemoiwa, a mathematics and physics teacher at Emining Boys High School in Mogotio, Baringo County, was received at the TSC headquarters in Upper Hill, Nairobi, on Thursday, September 11, by Acting CEO Evaleen Mitei.

The win comes as a significant endorsement of TSC’s vision of “developing a motivated, ethical and globally competitive teacher.”

Speaking during the reception, Mitei commended Chemoiwa for flying Kenya’s flag high and demonstrating the quality of teachers nurtured within the TSC system.

With 15 years of teaching experience, Chemoiwa said she never imagined she would win the award. “I never thought I would win. In May, I got a call from the TSC informing me that I had been nominated. It was a big surprise,” she said.

She added that teaching is a calling for her, and heading co-curricular activities has helped her connect with learners and inspire them to embrace science subjects.

Her school has been designated as a STEM centre, where she started a robotics training.

Although the Covid-19 pandemic slowed progress, Chemoiwa says she has remained committed to ensuring learners excel in science and technology.

She believes the award has boosted her morale and will continue to inspire both learners and colleagues.

“I wish to give more to my students and encourage other teachers to emulate and pick lessons from this win,” she said.

The African Union Teacher Prize was established to recognise the central role of teachers in achieving Agenda 2063’s education and skills revolution, under the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 16–25).

The award ceremony will be held next month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Chemoiwa will be celebrated alongside other outstanding educators from across the continent.
