The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has opposed the recent proposal to transfer teachers’ medical cover which is currently being managed by Minet Kenya Insurance Brokers Limited to Social Health Authority (SHA).
WATCH:
Speaking recently, during the KNUT Eldoret West branch Annual General Meeting (AGM), the union Secretary General Collins Oyuu stated that teachers want to remain with the Comprehensive Medical Cover, noting that the cover is sourced on contractual basis, then it is only fair that the best bidder takes the contract home.
Oyuu has urged the government to resolve current problems in SHA before they could onboard teachers, arguing that the challenges teachers faced under Minet were trivial and simply needed union leadership intervention to resolve them.

“What we must do as a union is to make sure that our members get services on matters health that resemble the money teachers sacrifice from their pay slips for medical cover,” said Oyuu.
Minet has been offering the teachers Medical Cover for the last 10 years, with the current contract expected to expire in November this year, with packaging offering extensive coverage, including specialized consultations, dental and optical care, and chronic condition management for over 400,000 teachers and their dependents.
