Kisii woman rep decries high cases of unreported defilements involving school girls

Kisii County woman representative Dorice Aburi has decried the unreported high cases of child defilement in the region saying that unless it is checked it will affect the victims adversely.

The Woman rep who speaking in Kisii town on Saturday, blamed parents whose children are defiled by known people especially close relatives, who pay them some money and reconcile at home without informing the police for legal action to be taken against the suspects.

“I am saddened with these actions where a child is defiled and parents are given a goat to compromise with the suspect in village kangaroo courts.” She said.

The MP lauds the recent degree by the Chief Justice Martha Koome that banned mediation on cases touching child abuse and Gender Based Violence (GBV) saying that it will cushion the victims from their attackers as they seek justice.

She said that her office has always taken keen interest on the matters affecting children especially the girl by providing sanitary towels to enable them stay in school during their monthly period times, mentorship programmes and provision education bursary fund but said that was not enough unless it was given collective approach by all in society.

She appealed to the Nyumba Kumi groups to be in the frontline towards the protection of children and their education because they live in the villages and understand their problems better than anyone else.

She further revealed that her office was in the process of compiling the list of the all abused children in the county and those who have dropped out of school to assist them to return.

“My office is finalizing the list of the affected children and when it will be ready, it will provide way on those that need guidance and counseling, court attention or treatment then they will place them to suitable positions of help.

She asked all churches and other social community workers to consult her office for possible partnership to fight the mess in the county.
