The County Government of Busia has launched a project to install lightning arrestors in schools, aiming to protect learners and teachers from lightning-related accidents.
The three-month initiative, spearheaded by the Directorate of Disaster Risk Management (DRM), began on Thursday with installations at St. Paul’s Amukura Secondary School in Teso South and St. Michael Burinda Comprehensive Primary School in Butula Sub-County.
Lightning strikes remain a seasonal threat in parts of the county, particularly during the rainy season. The county has contracted Ventures Ltd to carry out the installations in line with established safety standards.

Director of Disaster Risk Management Joel Osinya said the project underscores the county’s commitment to prioritising the safety of children.
“We are taking deliberate steps to protect our learners. Their safety comes first, and this project is part of a wider plan to strengthen disaster preparedness in our schools,” he said.
County officials say the installations will significantly reduce risks posed by lightning, while also advancing the government’s broader agenda on child safety and disaster management.
