Big relief: Govt disburses Ksh23 billion to 802,159 university, TVET students

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba confirmed Ksh.23.16B funding for 802,159 university and TVET students nationwide.

The Ministry of Education has confirmed the release of Ksh . 23.16 billion to benefit 802,159 students enrolled in universities and TVET institutions across Kenya.

In a statement issued on Friday, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba explained that the money was channelled through the Universities Fund and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

The Universities Fund has disbursed Ksh . $ 4.1 billion to public universities for scholarship support to students.

The Higher Education Loans Board has disbursed Ksh . 19.06 billion, comprising Ksh . 7.6 billion for tuition and Ksh . 11.46 billion for student upkeep,” said CS Ogamba.

He noted that upkeep allocations have already been credited to students’ designated payment platforms.

Many students are reporting to their respective campuses this month and next month.

The CS further appealed to beneficiaries to log into the official HELB portal to confirm the amounts credited, ensuring transparency and accountability in the disbursement process.

The Ministry has also extended the deadline for first-year students to September 14, 2025 to ensure inclusivity, so that applicants can have time to apply for support.

According to CS Ogamba, the government is steadfast in its pledge to sustain funding for higher education, making it both affordable and accessible for all.

This latest release follows another disbursement just a week earlier, when the Ministry—through HELB—allocated Ksh.9.46 billion to support 309,178 university learners.

At that time, CS Ogamba outlined that Ksh.5.76 billion was directed towards tuition fees, while Ksh.3.7 billion was set aside for upkeep expenses.

By continuing to release such funds, the government is reinforcing its commitment to easing the financial burden on students and their families, while ensuring that learners remain focused on their academic goals.
