The Co-operative University of Kenya in collaboration with the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) has proposed the establishment of an Africa Horticulture Centre aimed at creating a continental hub for horticulture research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
The University Chancellor Dr. Benard William Chitunga presented the proposal during a consultative meeting with Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, KALRO Chairperson Thuo Mathenge, and senior university officials.
The proposed centre would merge KALRO’s scientific talent and research capacity with the Cooperative University’s entrepreneurial drive and passion for horticulture.
CS Kagwe said horticulture is a very important part of Kenya’s economy, and this idea comes at the right time.
“We must think strategically about the future. The partnership between KALRO and the Cooperative University has the potential to make Kenya a continental leader in horticulture innovation,” said Kagwe.

Kagwe directed the formation of a technical team to develop working modalities and define stakeholder roles, adding that the initiative should be registered as an international institution to attract global partners and investment.
“We want every stakeholder to understand what is in it for them and for the country. With KALRO’s research strength and the Cooperative University’s entrepreneurial capacity, Kenya has the chance to shape horticulture for Africa and beyond,” the CS said.
Mathenge, the KALRO Chairperson said the proposal is a timely opportunity to deepen collaboration between research and academia.
He said the partnership would allow KALRO’s research breakthroughs to be translated into practical solutions for farmers and entrepreneurs across the continent.
If approved, the Africa Horticulture Centre would be positioned as an intergovernmental agency to drive horticulture research, development, and training, while boosting the continent’s competitiveness in the global market.
