Education stakeholders will tomorrow be introduced to the new head of Kakamega High School when the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) conducts the official handover at the institution.

The name of the new principal has been kept secret, albeit due to the premium attached to the position by various interest groups and the noise it’s likely to arouse.

A source at TSC confided to Education News (EN) last evening that the handover exercise is scheduled to take place this morning (Thursday). However, it did not disclose the name of the principal.

TSC had scheduled the handover for yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon, with indications that Malava Boys High School principal Dr. Aliva Livasu was to succeed the retired principal, Dr. Julius Mambili.

According to Education News, Dr. Livasu was expected to hand over the TSC handover rota to Mr. Moyi at Malava school yesterday (August 20th). However, his destination was not specified, although a takeover exercise had also been scheduled at Kakamega School in the afternoon by an unidentified principal.

Controversy has been stoked in the Kakamega school transition lately, with local politicians, the school board of management (BoM), and the Kakamega school alumni all pulling in different directions over the person to head this premier national school into its millennium.

Education News can authoritatively report that the Kakamega school alumni defied their two representatives on BoM on the selection of Senende High school principal Tom Shabisa and instead, through the vice chairman Hassan Abass, wrote to the education ministry and TSC proposing the name of a former deputy and Green Commandos coach Vitalis Kangaiya.

EN is also privy to information that the alumni had been advised to suggest more names, just in case Kangaiya was not picked.

The alumni then proposed the principals of Ten Week High School, Paul Boit Boys’ School, Vihiga Boys’ School, and St. Mary’s Yala as alternatives.

The TSC had reportedly promised to communicate with the alumni on Tuesday. However, by the close of Tuesday, there was no announcement.

EN also reached Dr. Livasu on Tuesday evening, who equally denied knowledge of his transfer to Kakamega school.

“Take over from who?” was his question when reached for comment. “I’ve not received any letter ..
Who is holding on to my letter?” he asked.

Kakamega County Director of TSC, Wilson Koros, had told EN on Monday that he had received Dr. Aliva’s letter of appointment.

When Dr. Mambili’s time at the school was due, the School BoM reportedly organised interviews for his likely successor—the principals of Mukumu Boys, Senende Boys, Butere Boys, Vihiga Boys and Malava Boys.

The BoM was impressed by Shabisa of Senende Boys.

Last week, TSC posted two deputies to address the leadership crisis occasioned by the promotion and transfer of Deputy Principal David Sikulu to Sidokho Mixed School in Navalholo Sub-county and Wycliffe Nabdwa to Matete.

Chief Principal Dr. Mambili has been in charge at the school for the past two and a half years.

Chief Principal Shabisa’s appointment, although supported by Lurambi MP Titus Khamala, caused disquiet.

Dr Livasu, who has headed Musingu Boys, Taranganya Boys, Teremi Boys, and Malava, was overlooked by the BoM due to his alleged weak support for sports and talent development.

He arrived at Malava Boys mid-last year, guiding the institution back to the sports limelight with a volleyball silver medal at this year’s national Term Two ‘B’ secondary schools ballgames, hosted by Kakamega School.
