Education stakeholders warn of rampant Govt meddling in school management

Board of Management members and school heads accuse local administrators of overstepping their role and undermining school management.

Stakeholders from the education sector have raised concerns about the increasing negative involvement of key government figures in the management of schools, particularly secondary schools, in the country.

Education News has received an increased number of complaints from stakeholders, who claim that it is causing a decline in the performance and overall well-being of schools.

In Uasin Gishu, Nandi, and Samburu counties, the interviewed heads of institutions and Board of Management (BoM) members lambasted chiefs and those in authority in various government agencies for what they term as excessive involvement in issues that are not within their domains.

“How does a chief who is an ex officio on any School board dictate to the head teacher how teachers on BoM terms be employed and remunerated?” asked Hassan Cherop, a BoM member from Eldoret.

The situation is equally the same in Nandi and Samburu counties, where many Board members are raising concerns about rampant interference by the local administration.

It is reported that administrators are driven solely by an insatiable desire to secure school tenders and employment for their relatives and friends within their areas of jurisdiction.

Education news further revealed that local administrators, in some instances, have compelled primary, secondary, and vocational institutions to have their representatives attend every board meeting they convene.

To worsen, some go to the extent of influencing the direction the meeting’s agenda takes.

Recently, a Bishop in Nyanza complained of the interference of schools in the region by a senior government officer.

The Bishop’s stance reflects the extent to which schools have fallen into interference, which has negatively impacted the overall performance of our learning echelons.

It is the Ministry of Education’s responsibility to intervene and protect the school administration from further interference.
