EACC probes Laikipia Speaker over alleged forged KCSE certificate

EACC officers are investigating Laikipia County Assembly Speaker Lantano Nabaala over allegations of using a forged KCSE certificate, with raids conducted in four towns to seize evidence.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is investigating Laikipia County Assembly Speaker Lantano Nabaala over allegations that he used a forged Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate to secure his position.

The probe began after several Members of the County Assembly lodged formal complaints questioning the authenticity of his academic qualifications.

On August 12, 2025, EACC officers conducted coordinated raids in multiple locations linked to the Speaker. The operations, authorised by a search warrant from the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Nyeri, targeted his residence in Muthaiga, Nairobi, his office at the County Assembly in Nanyuki, the County Assembly Service Board offices in Nyahururu, and the Human Resources office in Rumuruti.

Investigators seized documentary and electronic materials believed to be crucial to verifying his credentials.

The Commission states that the inquiry is nearing completion and is considering recovering approximately Ksh15 million in salaries, allowances, and benefits that Nabaala has earned since assuming the role of Speaker in October 2022.

If the documents are proven to be fraudulent, the recovery process would form part of a broader legal action. EACC has framed the case as part of a broader crackdown on graft at the county level.

Chairperson David Oginde recently confirmed that nine sitting governors are also under active investigation for various corruption-related offences.

The Commission maintains that ensuring public officials meet legal and ethical standards, including the authenticity of academic credentials, is essential to protecting public trust and safeguarding county resources.
