President William Ruto announced that Wikondiek Secondary School in Homa Bay County will be renamed Mama Phoebe Asiyo Secondary School. The announcement was made on August 8, 2025 during the state funeral of Phoebe Asiyo in Wii Kondiek village, Karachuonyo. The move is part of the government’s effort to honor her exceptional contribution to leadership, women’s empowerment, gender equality, human rights and public service in Kenya.
Mama Phoebe Asiyo was celebrated as a trailblazer whose career in politics and advocacy spanned decades. She served as one of Kenya’s earliest female Members of Parliament (MP) and championed laws and policies that advanced the rights of women and marginalized groups. President Ruto’s decision reflects the high regard in which she was held both nationally and internationally.
In addition to renaming the school, the President confirmed that monuments will be erected in both Homa Bay and Nairobi in her memory. The initiative follows a request by Raila Odinga to create permanent landmarks that will immortalize her legacy. The monuments are expected to serve as educational and historical references for generations to come.

Mama Phoebe Asiyo’s public service record includes her role as a parliamentarian for Karachuonyo Constituency, where she served multiple terms. She was known for her strong advocacy on matters affecting women, children and vulnerable communities. Her leadership inspired the growth of women’s organizations across the country, helping to amplify their voices in governance and decision making processes.
The renaming of the institution corrects earlier reports that a primary school was to be renamed. Official information confirms that it is Wikondiek Secondary School that will carry her name, ensuring that the tribute aligns with the community where she lived and worked. The school will stand as a reminder of her lifelong commitment to education, equality and community development.
This national recognition cements Mama Phoebe Asiyo’s place in history as a pioneer of leadership and social justice. It also signals a continued effort by the government to highlight the achievements of Kenyan women who have shaped the nation’s development.
