The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has threatened to disrupt learning in schools across the country if the negotiated package in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is not reflected in the teachers’ July pay slips.
Secretary General Collins Oyuu asked the government to expedite the implementation, lest it attract the wrath of the union.
“On July 18th, TSC produced a counteroffer on the demands we had made on the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and we succeeded. We got an increment of between 12 per cent and 29.5 per cent, “said Oyuu, adding that, given the state of the Country’s economy, the union has won a big war.
“We thought it could be cashless again as was the case in 2021-2025, and with our prayers, aggressiveness, and determination, we negotiated for something. So I want to make it clear to teachers that the CBA for 2025-2029 has an increment of monetary value from 12 per cent to 29.5 per cent.”
Speaking during Rarieda’s Education Day held at Chianda High School, Oyuu said the funds will be reflected in their payslips on July 1, 2025. Failure to do so, they shall resort to an action that will make those in authority regret.
“I want every teacher to look at their payslips because we know it comes before the end of the month, and if there is no increment, let them notify us because it won’t be business as usual,” said Oyuu.
Oyuu added that teachers will benefit from allowances in recognition of their responsibilities, and the details will be communicated to all schools through the branch secretaries so that teachers can be informed.

Oyuu also revealed that in the new CBA, teachers who, unfortunately, find themselves on the wrong side of things will now benefit from a pension even after interdiction.
“In the past before this new CBA, teachers got interdicted even at the age 59 years and lose all the benefits. In this CBA, pensions and benefits is a must,” he noted.
Oyuu cited sexual relationship between teachers and students as a notorious crime that has seen interdictions of many teachers and hence appealed to teachers to shun the vice.
The SG made the remarks only few days after Education PS Julius Bitok called for the arrest and prosecution of a teacher from Alliance Girls High School who was accused of engaging in sexual relationship with students.
PS Bitok had reiterated the government’s uncompromising stance on safeguarding learners and ensuring schools remain safe, protective environments.
