Kitui’s Kyuso Boys closed for a week after student rampage

Kyuso Boys Secondary School in Kitui County has been closed for one week following a student rampage on the night of Friday, July 11, 2025.

The unrest which led to destructions whereby a dormitory was set on fire and several windowpanes shattered, disrupted normal learning activities and forced school authorities to take immediate action.

The closure was ordered on July 12, by education officials to allow investigations and restore calm. Kyuso sub county education officer Stephen Mulandi stated that students had raised concerns about being underfed, alleging that multiple learners were forced to share food from a single plate. However, education officials suspect that the riot may have been prompted by fear of the upcoming end of term examinations.
