Education stakeholders demand apology from MP Shakeel Shabbir over disrespectful remarks to teachers, TSC officials

KIsumu East Mp Ahmed Shabir.

Education stakeholders in the country through their umbrella body, Education Stakeholders Association of Kenya (ESAK) which brings together teacher associations and other education related organisations has condemned the recent utterances and disrespect by Kisumu East MP Shakeel Shabbir in a video that has gone viral in the Internet recently to teachers and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) officials.

Through their National Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Association Ndung’u Wangenye, the Association has stated that the action by the legislator is not only disrespectful but it’s a sign of arrogance on the part of the MP who as a state officer is supposed to carry himself in a manner that brings honour to the nation and dignity to the office that people of Kisumu East and Kenyans at large have entrusted him.

“As stakeholders in the education sector we are greatly disturbed by utterances of Kisumu East Member of Parliament Hon Shakeel Shabbir utterances of unpalatable, disreputable and discreditable words to teachers and other TSC officials in a public event in his constitutency towards the end of this week. Making the matter worse the utterances were directed towards this educators in full glare of the students they teach and supervise,” said Wangenye.

“The authority he is exercising is a public trust which vests in him the responsibility to serve the people, rather than the power to rule them. As Education Stakeholders Association of Kenya we condemn this acts with the stongest terms possible and demand that Hon Shakeel Shabbir unconditionally admit liability for his irresponsible utterances. Further we demand he retract and publicly apologise to the education officials he disrespected in the same platform and publicity it exhibited,” he added.

The MP has now come under intense fire after a video footage emerged while attending an event in one of the schools in his constituency lecturing teachers in front of students and parents.
