A somber mood has engulfed Mikindani Primary School in Jomvu, Mombasa County, after a female teacher lost her life in a tragic road accident that occurred on the evening of Thursday, July 3, 2025, along the Maasai area on the Taita Taveta–Mombasa highway.
The teacher was accompanying pupils from the school who were returning from Kenyatta High School, where they had participated in a regional music and drama festival. The school bus they were traveling in was involved in the fatal crash while heading back to Mikindani.
Two students sustained serious injuries, while ten others suffered minor wounds. All the injured were rushed to Mikindani Medical Centre, where they received emergency treatment. Medical personnel have since confirmed that the students are in stable condition.

Confirming the incident, Mikindani Ward MCA Jactone Madialo visited the school and hospital, assuring parents that all affected pupils were out of danger. “We are heartbroken by the loss of one of our teachers, a mentor and guardian to many children. We stand with the family and the school during this difficult time,” he said.
Jomvu Constituency MP Badi Twalib also visited the school and pledged to cater for all hospital bills incurred by the affected pupils. He further promised psychological support to help learners and staff cope with the trauma brought by the tragedy.
“We shall walk with this school every step of the way until full recovery. The well-being of our children comes first,” said the MP.
The teacher’s body was moved to the Coast General Hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem and burial arrangements.

The accident has sparked fresh concerns over the safety of school transport during co-curricular trips, especially along busy highways. Education stakeholders and local leaders have called for tighter transport safety measures for schools participating in off-campus activities.
Mikindani Primary School has since suspended classes as staff and students come to terms with the tragic event. Parents have continued to arrive at the school, many visibly shaken but relieved that their children are alive.
The regional music and drama festival, where the students had showcased their talents earlier that day, had drawn schools from across the coastal region. What was meant to be a joyful return from a successful performance quickly turned into a moment of mourning for the Mikindani school community.
