More than 750 students in Nairobi’s informal settlements are stepping into classrooms with renewed pride, courtesy of Kenya Power Foundation’s (KPF) school uniform donation drive under its Luku Safi initiative.

The Luku Safi initiative which forms part of the Kenya Power Foundation’s broader Social Investment and Community Wellness Pillar, is focusing on education, energy, environment, and community wellbeing, leveraging Kenya Power’s national presence to make a difference in all 47 counties

According to the foundation official, the program has provided uniforms to learners in informal settlements such as Korogocho, Mathare, Githurai, and Mukuru Kwa Njenga.

“This year, we’ve extended our support to two more schools in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, and we’re targeting another 500 learners in the coming year,” said Kenya Power Head of Communications, Kevin Sang. “It’s not just about clothing it’s about confidence, focus, and dignity.”

Teachers say the impact has been profound as there has been an improvement in students’ academic performance at Kwa Njenga Primary School. The turnaround has been attributed to improved hygiene, consistent attendance by learners and self-esteem.

Parents, many of whom struggle to meet even basic needs, expressed deep appreciation. “Uniforms are a luxury for us,” said Geoffrey Sittonik, a parent. “This help is a big relief.”

“Beyond learning, the initiative is also boosting local livelihoods. Community-based tailors have been engaged to stitch the uniforms, a move that has improved incomes and deepened community ownership of the project, this is how we light up futures,” Sang said.
