Underdogs uproot giants as newcomers rewrite football history in Nyanza

A glimpse of the action from one of Nyanza’s football battlefields

Upcoming teams in the ongoing term two games in Kisumu and Siaya over the weekend pulled major surprises.

Subsequently, football underdogs have dethroned reigning champions to claim county titles in the two Nyanza region counties.

In Kisumu County, Onjiko High School eclipsed defending champions Kisumu Day in the semifinals played at Moi Stadium over the weekend.

The match ended 1-1 in regulation time before Onjiko triumphed 4-3 in the post-match penalty shootout.

Kisumu day head coach Booker Odhiambo said they had many chances that they did not utilise.

‘Coming in for the penalties, we just didn’t have luck. That’s how football is: we win some, we lose some. We’ll bounce back in 2026,” he said.

In Homa Bay County, Karabok Secondary School lifted the boys’ football title after edging out Ringa Boys 6-5 in post-match penalties.

The two teams had also settled for a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Siaya County witnessed a high-stakes derby as St Mary’s Yala, fondly known as the Black Saints, defeated archrivals and defending champions Ambira High School 1-0 to clinch the county title. The match was held at St Mary’s Yala grounds.

The win marks a significant comeback for the St Mary’s Yala, who lost last year’s final to Ambira.

It also extends their consistent performance, having now reached the county final for three consecutive years.

The team reached the final after dominating Wagai High School 3-0 in the semifinals, while Ambira narrowly beat Got Agulu 1-0.

In the girls’ football category, Hawinga Girls defeated Sinaga Girls to earn a place in the final against Jera Secondary School from Ugenya Sub-county.

In Homa Bay, Kobala Girls emerged victorious in the girls’ final after a 0-0 draw in regular time, beating Saye Girls 4-2 in penalties.

St Mary’s Yala, on the other hand, also retained its dominance in rugby sevens.
