St Joseph’s Girls snatch football glory and netball crown in Trans-Nzoia

St Joseph’s Girls, popularly known as "Joga" Kitale, celebrated their victories in style.

Reigning champions of girls’ high school football in Trans-Nzoia County and the Rift Valley region, St Joseph’s Girls “Joga” Kitale, defended their title after edging out their long-time rivals Wiyeta Girls 4-3 in post-match penalties.

This followed a goalless draw in both regular and extra time during the final held at St Anthony’s grounds in Kitale on Saturday.

The queens, coached by Rosebella Munzala Orwaro, booked their spot in the final after defeating St Andrew’s Baraton 2-0 at Kwanza Girls’ grounds on Friday.

Meanwhile, Wiyeta Girls secured their final ticket with a narrow 1-0 win over Andersen in the second semi-final held at Meteitei grounds, Kwanza.

In netball, St Joseph’s Girls Kitale clinched the Trans-Nzoia title after beating defending champions Andersen High School 48-38 in the final held at Kapkoi RC Primary School, Kwanza, on Friday, crowning them the new netball queens of the region.

However, in the 3×3 basketball category, St Brigid Girls Kiminini overpowered St Joseph’s Girls “Joga” with a convincing 12-3 victory at Kolongolo grounds, Trans-Nzoia.

In volleyball, the defending champions, Kesogon Girls, coached by Emmanuel Mukoya, swept St Joseph’s Girls in straight sets, 3-0, at Kwanza Boys grounds.

In the boys’ football competition, St Joseph’s Boys advanced to the semi-finals after thrashing Holy Trinity Boys 3-0 at Kapkoi Centre, while St Anthony Boys beat Kabuyefwe Boys 2-0 at Metetei grounds in Kwanza.

Both the semi-finals and finals were scheduled for Saturday.

The second boys’ semi-final between Goseta Boys and Bwake Boys was abandoned midway after chaos erupted when a fan stormed the pitch and punched a Goseta player during the second half.

The incident sparked unrest as more fans intervened, leading the central referee to call off the match at Kiminini Primary School grounds for safety reasons.
