The Makueni branch of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Teachers (KUPPET) held a candlelight vigil in memory of the slain teacher, Albert Ojwang.

Speaking during an event held outside the KUPPET office in Wote, Makueni, branch executive secretary Justus Kimeu expressed the concern of teachers, condemning the act and stating that the perpetrators must face the law.

“That is a young boy who had a very promising future. No amount of blogging or any mistake amounts to murdering someone. We pray that God continues to console the family. It’s very sad news to swallow,” Kimeu said..

He assured their support towards the family, adding that they will stand firmly against such brutality and that it must end. He noted that this is not the end; if called upon to demonstrate, they will do it.

The union official called upon the Kenyan police to act humanely. He added that Albert was killed by government organs, especially the Kenyan police, and they must take full responsibility.

KUPPET branch chairman Erastus Kimetu, Brigadier, noted that by killing a teacher, police are disadvantaging teachers. “They can’t give back life, and this is very wrong. I want to thank the senate and parliament for taking up the matter seriously,” Kimeu added.

Kimetu noted that even lighting a candle is not enough for Albert. The lives of teachers matter, and so do those of any other Kenyan.
