Teachers in Machakos have been challenged to invest in businesses through their Saccos to cushion themselves from difficult economic times.

Speaking at the Machakos Town Teachers’ Welfare Association Annual General Meeting at the Machakos Township Primary School on Saturday, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti said teachers should not only come together for welfare needs, such as during bereavement, but should also invest to safeguard their future.

Governor Ndeti, the Chief Guest at the event, offered to allocate a portion of land for teachers at the New Machakos City grounds so that they could invest in a project of their choice.

“I commend Machakos teachers for coming together to care for your welfare. Do not just stop at welfare; think about investment, too. I am willing to give you land at the New Machakos City where you can invest,” said Governor Ndeti.

She said many teachers had little to take home, and their payslips showed many deductions, making their lives difficult.

Governor Wavinya opposed the proposed stoppage of hardship allowances for teachers in Masinga, Mwala, and Kalama Sub -counties, adding that the move would make their lives more difficult.

She called on Members of Parliament from the affected areas to speak up for their people and oppose the planned policy changes.

Kenya National Union of Teachers  (KNUT) Machakos Branch Secretary Judas Wewa shared similar sentiments, saying it was worrying that local MPs were silent when such a crucial matter was being discussed.

He said teachers would follow the proceedings when the debate on hardship allowances was taken to Parliament.

KEPSHA Chairman Eric Mutunga, also the head teacher of Machakos Township Primary School, thanked Governor Wavinya for supporting teachers’ welfare.

“As teachers, we know how to award marks and we know Governor Wavinya has exceeded expectations,” said Mr Mutunga.

About 1000 Primary School teachers attended the event.
