Four students awarded math scholarship at African Olympiad Academy

Four high school students have been awarded prestigious three-year mathematics scholarship at the African Olympiad Academy (AOA) in Kigali, Rwanda.

The students Gilbert Ogoro and Shawn Tunai from Alliance Boys High School, Tumi Imani from Lukenya High School, and Baraka Mulwa from Mangu High School recorded impressive performance in the Pan-African Rising Stars Mathematics Contest.

The contest which was held at the Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) Nairobi is part of the AOA’s talent recruitment camp tour, which seeks to identify and nurture students who are best in mathematicians from across the continent.

The winners were selected accordingly, based on their performance at the Kenya Math Olympiad (KMO), which is organized by CEMASTEA, the University of Nairobi and the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) based at the University of Waterloo Ontario, Canada

CEMASTEA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jacinta Akatsa said KMO is held across the country and it involves more than 17,000 students from more than 250 schools.

She said Mathematics is essential not just about solving problems, but it is all about nurturing creativity, critical thinking and a love for lifelong learning.

The CEO said is a step towards nurturing young talent in schools and advancing scientific innovation in the country.

The contest designed to prepare the students for major global competitions such as the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) and the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

The winners will be awarded a full scholarship to attend the AOA, inclusive of tuition, boarding, uniform, and travel expenses.

Nairobi was the latest stop for the AOA Pan-African Rising Stars Mathematics Camp tour. The Rising Stars Camps recently took place in Johannesburg, Kigali, and Arusha and will continue on to Kampala, followed by Gaborone for PAMO 2025

African Olympiad Academy executive director Arun Shanmuganathan, said that the Academy said Kenya has multi-talented students who will shine in the international platform.

The CEO who is also the founder noted that the Math Olympiad programme provides students with early opportunities to nurture their dreams and sharpen their problem-solving skills to be experts in their fields.

The African Olympiad Academy aims to develop nascent Math and Science talent from Africa into engaged, globally-competitive problem solvers with a deep commitment to the continent.
