Nyeri National Polytechnic promotes climate change restoration

As Nyeri National Polytechnic celebrate its 5th graduation ceremony, the institution takes pride in trail blazing on the government’s agenda to curb climate change by planting 12 billion trees by 2032.

The institution embarked on the activities to align with government’s policy of Greening TVETs by establishing a tree nursery, where they produced over 100,000 seedlings.

The polytechnic has also been involved in tree planting activities within the institution and the community around especially at the Tumutumu hills which was adopted for restoration and protection by the state.

All these were made possible by the various environmental clubs and societies run by the students and housed by the institution. These clubs which advocate for environmental conservancy include; Tourism club, Green Movement club, Scouts club, Presidential awards and Environmental clubs.

The Institution also adopted the renewable source of energy through the installation of solar panels and installation of bio-gas plant to reduce pollution, lower energy cost, increase energy security and promote environmental protection.

These small but relevant step towards restoring the climate and environment normalcy has proved that environmental restoration is not a one man show but a combined effort that requires active participation of every person and community.

TVETs Greening program was launched in June,2023, by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Forestry to enable TVETs to be the pace setters in the greening technology and practices so as to reduce carbon emissions in their institutions and surrounding communities. Its main purpose was to enable TVETs to integrate sustainability and environmental awareness into their systems, equipping individuals with skills for green economy and sustainable practices.
